Let me make this plain: you cannot talk about the “future of AI” if you are not talking about culture. Period. Full stop. Code without culture is just math with no meaning. It is a machine with no music, a system with no rhythm. Technology can accomplish extraordinary things, but without the heartbeat of culture—without the people, the history, the flavor—it remains empty.
The big problem nobody seems to want to say out loud is that AI is moving at light speed, yet we are still being treated like an afterthought. Our slang, our fashion, our rhythms are taken and replicated, but when it comes to building the technology, suddenly we are “not in the room,” “not qualified,” or “too niche.” That is not only disrespectful, it is dangerous. When we are not part of the code, it ends up using us. History has already shown what happens when the system does not know your face, your voice, your story.
Picture this: a split-screen. On the left, a glowing wall of binary code, a facial recognition system scanning someone’s skin tone. On the right, a Black mother holding up a faded Polaroid from her child’s graduation, pride etched into every wrinkle on her face. On the left, ChatGPT delivering a clean summary of American history. On the right, a griot in West Africa reciting 400 years of lineage from memory. On the left, Spotify’s algorithm neatly placing your playlist into “Hip-Hop/R&B.” On the right, a Sunday cookout where Frankie Beverly flows into Kendrick Lamar without interruption, no labels, no skips—just pure connection. The machine runs on data. But the data it holds does not reflect us.
Tech without culture is cold. Culture without tech becomes silenced. We need both. We need AI that can recognize a Black face in a crowd. AI that understands the difference between African American English and “bad grammar.” AI that is trained on gospel choirs, not only Gregorian chants. If we do not get involved now—if we do not build it, shape it, and feed it—AI will continue to overlook us. And when it overlooks us, it misuses us.
This is why SOLE exists. We are not here to adapt to the algorithm. We are here to flip it. To bridge the gap between code and culture. To stitch together the split-screen so that our lived experiences are not an afterthought, but the foundation. We turn cultural intelligence into digital architecture. We are not chasing the future, we are building it, and we are doing it on our terms.
AI might shape the future. But we shape the soul. And without soul, there is no future worth talking about.
